Unsex Me Here: Female Power and Shakespearean Tragedy

(Out of Print)

Author : Judy Celine Ick
ISBN : 971-8729-29-1
Year : 1999
No. of pages : 220
Price : (Out of stock)

“Looking at the powerful in four early Jacobean tragedies — Othello, Macbeth, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus — reveals not a systematic, absolute purging but a complex refiguration of female power. These texts are profoundly ambivalent about women and power. Women in power or the female will to power are almost always simultaneously discredited and glorified. On a very obvious level, one can point to the deaths of, say, Cleopatra or Desdomona and argue that, even if they do die, the manner of their deaths is exalted in the plays. Desdemona is the ‘sweetest innocent’ and ‘an angel’. Caesar praises Cleopatra for being ‘bravest at the last’ and Charmian calls her ‘ a lass unparalleled’ who died a death worthy of a ‘princess descended of so many royal kings’.” (from page 30)
