OVCRD Colloquium to feature UP Diliman’s Research, Creative Work and Extension Centers

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD) is pleased to invite the UP community and the public to the  Paliwanagan sa UP Diliman-OVCRD Colloquium 2013 to be held  on 21 January 2013 (Monday), 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the National Institute of Physics,  National Science Complex, UP Diliman. This is the third colloquium organized by the OVCRD under the theme Paliwanagan sa UP Diliman. Paliwanagan is a biannual event that aims to promote the research and creative work initiatives of UP Diliman constituents.

Unlike the past colloquia that featured individual researchers and creative workers, the January 21 Colloquium focuses on UP Diliman’s centers for research, creative work, and extension service.   The Colloquium provides a rare opportunity for the UP community to hear directly about research, creative work, and extension activities of the various centers in the campus.  Fifteen (15) such centers, coming from different academic disciplines, will discuss one of their current projects during the main Colloquium program.   Two special sessions will tackle vital University concerns: extension service and mentoring. In addition to the 17 oral presentations, a preliminary inventory and profile of 104 UP Diliman centers, institutes, laboratories and studios undertaking research, creative work and/or extension activities will be launched. Copies of the inventory will be distributed during the Colloquium.

The Colloquium also includes an incentive scheme in support of the research and creative work initiatives of UP Diliman units. Units could avail of additional funds for research/creative work initiatives or for research dissemination grant allocation depending on their participation in the Colloquium. Details about the incentive scheme can be found here.

We request that the attendees pre-register by email (upd.ovcrd.rduo(at) by 17 January 2013 and provide the following information to secure their accommodations:

OVCRD Hosts Seminar-workshop on Internationalization of UP Diliman Journals

by Narita EC de las Alas

The UP Diliman Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD), in cooperation with the UP Diliman Main Library and iGroup, held the Seminar-workshop on Listing/Internationalization of UP Diliman Journals last 19 November 2012 at the Audiovisual Room of the UP Diliman Main Library. The resource person was Dr.  Khee Hiang Lim, Principal Consultant of Thomson Reuters’ Intellectual Property & Science Southeast Asia.

The whole day seminar-workshop focused on the submission and evaluation process followed in selecting the journals that are listed in the Web of Science, the academic citation index of Thomson-Reuters, formerly known as ISI.  According to Dr. Lim, journals that apply for inclusion in the Web of Science are evaluated vis-a-vis four broad areas: publishing standards, editorial content, international diversity of authorship, and citation analysis.

Observance of good publishing standards means that journal articles should comply with international editorial conventions and have, among other things, an abstract in English, complete author information, and a bibliography with all-English entries. Above all, journal issues must be published on time. Dr. Lim stressed that timeliness is a crucial criterion that journals applying for Web of Science listing must satisfy. Journal publishers must be able to consistently release their journal issues on the exact promised date of publication.

Journals aiming to be included in the Web of Science must also ensure that their editorial content is of high quality. Editors should be quick to identify new scholarly topics in the field that is of interest to their intended readers. There should also be a good geographic spread of contributors, editors, and the editorial advisory board members.  Finally, the contributors and editors should be well-cited by their peers, and the journals themselves should be cited by scholars and researchers.

Dr. Lim’s presentation was followed by a workshop, during which the participants had the chance to evaluate how well their own journals meet Thomson-Reuters’ listing criteria. The assessment showed that the journals generally satisfy most of the standards for editorial content and international diversity of contributors and editors. However, many of the journals lose points on timeliness and citedness. The challenge for UP Diliman journals, therefore, is to find ways to attract more paper submissions and to be more ‘visible’ in the local and international research community.

Present during the workshop were editors/representatives from 22 UP Diliman journals, namely, Alipato, Asian Studies Journal, Daluyan, Diliman Review, Education Quarterly, Humanities Diliman,  Journal of English Studies and Comparative Literature, Journal of Philippine Librarianship, Kasarinlan, Muhon, Musika Jornal, Philippine Engineering Journal, Philippine Humanities Review, Philippine Journal of Labor and Industrial Relations, Philippine Journal of Public Administration, Philippine Journal of Social Development, Philippine Law Journal, Philippine Review of Economics, Philippine Social Science Review, Plaridel,  Science Diliman, and Social Science Diliman. Also present in the workshop were Dr. Violeda A. Umali, Director of the OVCRD’s Research Dissemination and Utilization Office; Mr. Rod Y. Tarlit, UP Diliman University Librarian; Mr. Felix Gaston, Jr., Managing Director of Libtech; and Ms. Marian Ramos-Eclevia, head of the UP Diliman Main Library’s General Reference Section.
